Method: Official documentation and pricing checked September 28, 2026. No benchmarks were run. Recommendations are based on documented features and billing, not hands-on results.
Replace VS Code only to solve a specific problem in your workflow. Extension requirements, debugging and team conventions are more useful selection criteria than a claimed startup-time ranking with no reproducible measurements.
Zed: an editor with collaboration and AI tools
Zed’s documentation describes an open-source editor with built-in collaboration and AI tools. Its pricing separates the free editor from hosted AI services: Pro is $10/month with $5 of included tokens, then usage billing. Business is $30/seat/month.
Evaluate it if that integrated workflow fits your project. Confirm language support, debugging and the extensions you rely on. A free editor does not mean unlimited hosted model usage. The Pro page lists additional usage at API list price plus 10%, with a spending cap available.
Sublime Text: a different licensing model
Sublime Text’s store lists a personal license at $99, including three years of updates. Continued use requires a license; the free download is an evaluation, not a permanent free-use promise. Business licensing is an annual subscription, starting at $65/seat/year for the first ten seats.
Evaluate it if you prefer its editing workflow and the available tooling covers your languages. Do not buy a personal license on behalf of a business while assuming the terms are identical. After the personal update period, further updates require an upgrade.
Cursor: evaluate the Agent workflow
Cursor pricing lists a limited free Hobby option and Pro at $20/month. Evaluate it if the Agent and editor experience is the reason for switching. There is no evidence here that it uses less memory or completes a project faster than VS Code.
If the current editor already works and you only want coding assistance, compare that narrower requirement before changing the entire environment. A migration should have a concrete expected benefit.
A practical comparison
| Requirement | What to check |
|---|---|
| Language tooling | Navigation, diagnostics and formatting for the actual repository |
| Debugging | A breakpoint and a representative test run |
| Extensions | Required functionality, not the total marketplace count |
| Remote work | Your supported connection and environment model |
| AI | Included usage, overages and repository-access policy |
| Licensing | Personal versus business terms and renewal costs |
Recommendation
Pilot one alternative at a time on a noncritical project. Keep the existing environment available until the necessary workflow is verified. Choose Zed for its documented integrated features, Sublime Text for its editor and licensing model, or Cursor for its Agent workflow when those solve an actual need. No benchmark, productivity score or guaranteed migration outcome is claimed.
