Note: This comparison is based on Kraken’s and Coinbase’s official fee schedules, help pages and announcements, checked on September 27, 2026. We did not run test trades or measure spreads, so there are no invented numbers here. Both exchanges change fees often (Coinbase cut its US Advanced fees on September 16, 2026), so confirm on their sites before you trade. This is not financial advice, and crypto can lose most of its value quickly.
Short answer:
- Kraken Pro if you care about fees. At the entry tier it charges 0.40% maker / 0.80% taker, compared with 0.50% / 0.90% on Coinbase Advanced. Kraken’s discounts also start sooner, at $2,500 of 30-day volume compared with $10,000 on Coinbase. Kraken is also the one Freqtrade officially supports for bots.
- Coinbase if you want the simplest app and don’t mind paying for the convenience. Coinbase’s simple buy has no fixed published fee: the spread and fee are shown at checkout. Coinbase Advanced closed a lot of the gap this month.
- Skip both “simple buy” screens for anything over pocket change. The pro order screens on either exchange cost far less.
Trading fees at a glance (US, September 2026)
| Kraken | Coinbase | |
|---|---|---|
| Pro screen, entry tier | Kraken Pro: 0.40% maker / 0.80% taker ($0+ 30-day volume) | Coinbase Advanced: 0.50% maker / 0.90% taker (US entry level) |
| First volume discount | $2,500+: 0.30% / 0.60% | Tiers start at $10,000 of qualifying volume |
| $10,000+ monthly volume | 0.22% / 0.38% | Tier rates shown on Coinbase’s logged-in fee page |
| Hold-to-qualify option | Tiers can also be met by assets held on Kraken (e.g. $20K for Tier 3) | Holding USDC can qualify you for VIP fees |
| Simple buy fee | 1% on instant and recurring buys, 1.5% on custom orders, plus a spread | Fee plus a spread, both variable and shown in the trade preview |
| Simple-app limit orders | 1.5% (custom orders) | Separate 1% limit order execution fee |
| Subscription | Kraken+: $4.99/mo or $49.99/yr. Zero trading fees on up to $10K/month of app buys | Coinbase One: Basic $4.99/mo (zero fees up to $500/mo), Preferred $29.99/mo (up to $10K/mo), Premium $299.99/mo (unlimited) |
| Does the subscription cover pro trading? | No. Excludes Kraken Pro spot, futures, API and OTC | No. Excludes Coinbase Advanced, DEX and derivatives |
A maker order is a limit order that rests on the order book. A taker order fills immediately, like a market order. Kraken notes that Instant Buy volume does not count toward your Pro fee tier.
Funding and withdrawal fees
| Kraken | Coinbase | |
|---|---|---|
| ACH bank deposit (USD) | Free via Plaid, $1 minimum. Tradeable right away, with a 7-day withdrawal hold | Not itemized on Coinbase’s public help pages. Shown before you confirm |
| Debit card deposit | $0.25 + 3.75% ($10 minimum) | Varies by payment method. Shown in the trade preview |
| Wire | FedWire deposit: free | $10 incoming, $25 outgoing |
| BTC withdrawal (on-chain) | 0.000015 BTC fee, 0.000218 BTC minimum | Network fee based on Coinbase’s estimate, shown at send. Free between Coinbase users |
| BTC withdrawal (Lightning) | 0.1% | 0.2% of the amount (Lightning, per Coinbase’s fee disclosures) |
Kraken says withdrawal fees can change and the fee shown at confirmation is the one you pay. At an illustrative BTC price of $84,000, Kraken’s on-chain fee works out to about $1.26 per withdrawal.
Worked example: buying BTC with $100, $1,000 and $10,000
Assumptions:
- US account, entry fee tier, no Kraken+ or Coinbase One.
- USD already deposited by free ACH (Kraken) or bank transfer.
- One buy order of the stated size. The fee is the percentage times the order size.
- Spreads aren’t published as fixed numbers, so they are marked variable.
| Order | $100 | $1,000 | $10,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kraken Pro, limit (maker 0.40%) | $0.40 | $4.00 | $40.00 |
| Kraken Pro, market (taker 0.80%) | $0.80 | $8.00 | $80.00 |
| Coinbase Advanced, limit (maker 0.50%) | $0.50 | $5.00 | $50.00 |
| Coinbase Advanced, market (taker 0.90%) | $0.90 | $9.00 | $90.00 |
| Kraken app, instant buy (1% + spread) | $1.00 + spread | $10.00 + spread | $100.00 + spread |
| Coinbase app, simple buy | Variable, disclosed at checkout | Variable, disclosed at checkout | Variable, disclosed at checkout |
The math: $1,000 × 0.40% = $4.00, and $1,000 × 0.50% = $5.00. At every size, Kraken Pro’s limit order costs 20% less than Coinbase Advanced’s (0.40 ÷ 0.50). Its market order costs about 11% less (0.80 ÷ 0.90).
What changes at $10,000:
- Fee tiers are based on your past 30 days, so the first $10,000 buy is still charged at the entry tier.
- After that buy, your volume puts Kraken in Tier 3 (0.22% / 0.38%), and puts you at the start of Coinbase’s Advanced tiers.
- The next $10,000 limit buy on Kraken would cost $22.
If you pay by debit card on Kraken, the deposit fee dwarfs the trading fee:
- $100 costs $0.25 + $3.75 = $4.00.
- $1,000 costs $37.75.
- ACH is free, so use it.
Round trips matter for traders. Buying and then selling with limit orders on Kraken Pro costs 0.80% in total, and 1.00% on Coinbase Advanced. Our crypto bot backtest shows why that fee drag kills high-frequency strategies at retail size.
Do the subscriptions pay off?
- Kraken+ ($4.99/mo): only if you mostly use the simple app. It waives the 1% instant-buy fee on up to $10,000 a month, so it breaks even at about $499 of monthly app buys (1% of $499 ≈ $4.99). The spread still applies, and Kraken Pro and API trades aren’t covered.
- Coinbase One Basic ($4.99/mo): covers zero trading fees on only $500 a month, and the spread still applies. It doesn’t cover Advanced.
- Coinbase One Preferred ($29.99/mo): raises the cap to $10,000, but you’d still pay less on Coinbase Advanced or Kraken Pro without a subscription for most buys.
If you’re comfortable placing a limit order, neither subscription beats simply using the pro screen.
API access for trading bots
| Kraken | Coinbase | |
|---|---|---|
| API | Spot REST and WebSocket APIs (Kraken API docs) | Advanced Trade API: REST and WebSocket, one CDP API key |
| Fees on API trades | Kraken Pro spot schedule. Kraken+ excludes API trades | Advanced trading, so Coinbase One doesn’t cover it |
| Freqtrade support | Officially supported (spot and futures). Kraken’s API returns only 720 historic candles, so backtest data has to be built from trade downloads | Not listed in Freqtrade’s supported exchanges |
| Official SDKs | Docs show Python, Node.js and cURL examples, plus a Kraken CLI | Python (official), plus sample TypeScript, Go and Java SDKs |
If you plan to run Freqtrade, Kraken is the practical choice. Our backtest of 7 bot strategies was run on Kraken Pro’s 0.40% entry fee.
US availability
- Kraken does not offer services to residents of New York or Maine, according to its US quick-start guide. On-chain staking is limited to a listed set of states.
- Coinbase: we couldn’t find an official state-by-state list on its public help pages. Check eligibility when you sign up.
The Kraken sign-up bonus
New Kraken users who join through a referral link can get a sign-up bonus in crypto. See the terms on Kraken’s page.
Kraken’s own pages currently describe the offer differently:
- The referrals page says “up to $75”.
- The support FAQ describes a fixed $20 payout in your default currency.
Both require signing up in the Kraken app, depositing cash and buying a non-stablecoin crypto within a deadline. The exact amount, deadline and minimum trade are shown in the app when you sign up. Kraken’s referral support article also excludes New York and Maine.
Sign up for Kraken with the referral link. The steps and common mistakes are in our Kraken referral bonus guide.

Don’t forget taxes
In the US, every crypto sale or trade is a taxable event, and both exchanges report to the IRS. Fees are part of your cost basis, so keep your trade history. A tool like Koinly (affiliate link) can import your Kraken or Coinbase history by API or CSV and build Form 8949. Previewing your gains is free; downloading the report starts at $49 per tax year for up to 100 transactions (checked September 2026).
