Method: Official documentation and pricing checked September 28, 2026. No benchmarks were run. Recommendations are based on documented features and billing, not hands-on results.
Start with the review workflow in the repository host your team already uses. Moving code to gain a review interface is rarely the first experiment to run. Establish the required approval policy, then verify that the chosen plan can enforce it.
Two practical starting points
GitHub pull requests
GitHub’s review documentation describes comments, approval and requests for changes. GitHub Free includes unlimited public and private repositories. However, the existence of a review interface does not mean every private-repository enforcement feature is included in Free.
The pricing comparison places several advanced collaboration and protection features in paid plans. Check the exact repository visibility and organization plan before promising mandatory approvals or code-owner enforcement. An optional approval is not the same as a merge gate.
GitLab merge requests
GitLab’s review documentation covers comments and suggested changes across Free, Premium and Ultimate. Some reviewer-selection and approval-rule workflows are specifically associated with paid tiers.
GitLab pricing limits a private top-level group on GitLab.com Free to five users. That limit does not apply identically to public groups or self-managed Free. Match the actual hosting model to the plan; do not advertise a universal unlimited-team free tier.
What “free” should mean in your comparison
| Cost or requirement | Check before adopting |
|---|---|
| Repository access | Public versus private and user limits |
| Review workflow | Comments, suggestions and review status |
| Enforcement | Required approvals and who can bypass them |
| Automation | Separate CI or AI usage allowances |
| Hosting | Vendor-hosted service versus your own infrastructure |
A tool’s free review feature does not automatically include unlimited automated analysis or compute. Keep those purchases separate.
Improve the process before adding software
Use small changes with a clear description and relevant validation. Agree which kinds of findings block a merge and who is responsible for responding. Review correctness, error handling and maintainability; formatting can often be checked mechanically.
Measure your own review wait time and escaped defects before attributing an improvement to a tool. This article provides no evidence for a fixed percentage reduction in bugs or a claimed doubling of review speed.
Recommendation
Use GitHub reviews if the repository is already on GitHub and the plan supports the required policy. Use GitLab reviews under the same condition for GitLab. Upgrade only for a documented requirement that the free plan cannot satisfy. Evaluate separate review products when there is a specific workflow gap, rather than building a list of unverified free offers.
